EVOLVE Wilderness Stewardship Vacations 2012

EVOLVE with Friends of the Inyo!

Take your mountain getaway to a higher level in the Sierra Nevada wilderness by adding volunteering to your vacation. Participate in our Eastside Volunteer Outdoor Learning Vacation Experience (EVOLVE) with trail maintenance in spectacular locations in the John Muir and Ansel Adams Wilderness areas. You'll be lending a hand to America's public lands while soaking in the beauty of the Range of Light.

Trip costs include all meals, pack support and guides, with discounts for FOI members.  Join now for as little as $35/year! We are still working on our EVOLVE schedule for the Summer of 2012 and will update this website page as soon as we have nailed down definite dates. Stay tuned!

Longtime FOI member and volunteer Jo Bacon, who was Mayor of the Town of Mammoth Lakes when she volunteers at Thousand Island Lake in the Summer of 2011, had this to say about her experience:

"We are no longer able to sit back and expect someone else to do all of the backcountry trail maintenance. Cuts at the federal level this year have decimated funding for trail work throughout the Inyo National Forest. The United States Forest Service commitments to this trip were mules to carry in the equipment and tools ... as well as collaboration with FOI on the tasks to be completed. "I feel lucky that FOI has had the foresight to increase opportunities for wilderness stewardship in the past few years, giving us the option to help ensure that our wilderness is preserved."

We will also be sending updates about our upcoming summer program in our monthly online newsletter. So once again, stay tuned! "Why work so hard on a vacation?" Jo asked. "The trip allowed me to expand that volunteer commitment by being part of the volunteers who are augmenting 'traditional' trail crews."
