Grouse Mountain Hike

Date:
Apr 14 2012

Grouse Mountain is the centerpiece of the Buttermilk area, west of Bishop, with spectacular views of the adjacent higher peaks, such as Mt. Tom, Mt. Humphreys, and Basin Mountain. The peak is worth climbing at any time of the year but is particularly spectacular in the spring, when bird migration is peaking, flowers are starting to come out, Grouse Mountain Picnicand the smells, sites and sounds of spring are all around. The hike is not particularly easy - there's no trail, it can be brushy, and there's one creek crossing (two if you count the return journey). There is also a bit of rock scrambling near the summit, nothing more difficult than class 2.5. The reward is one of the best lunch spots in the area though, well worth the climb!

Bring clothing appropriate for the weather of the day - long pants and long sleeves highly recommended due to the brush, perhaps even leather gloves, a hiking stick, shoes you don't mind getting muddy, food and water for the day.

Meet at 8:30AM at the junction of the Buttermilk Road and West Line Street (Hwy 168), where we can park some vehicles and car pool from there. The B-milk road usually requires a high clearance vehicle.

Well behaved dogs are invited.

A Google Map to the meeting place can be found after the link.

For those who like to do their exploration via Google Earth, a kmz file can be found after the link.
