Grouse Mountain Hike
Grouse Mountain is a small peak west of Bishop and is somewhat overshadowed by the nearby peaks of the Sierra Crest. As such, it has a great view not only of the Owens Valley and environs but of the nearby peaks of the Sierra Crest, such as Mt. Humphreys, Basin Mountain, the Checkered Demon, and Mt. Tom, and more of course. Also, this should be a great time of year to find early migrant birds just starting to set up breeding territories out in the Buttermilk area.
The hike can be a bit rough - it's largely off trail and a bit brushy and there's some rock scrambling near the summit (which of course is optional). There's a stream crossing and you may get your feet wet. The reward is a chance to visit a mountain that is just out of town but which doesn't get much traffic.
Plan on a full day, bring appropriate food, water, and clothing.
Meet at the intersection of West Line Street (Highway 168 out of Bishop) and the Buttermilk Road at 8:30am on the 24th.
A google map to the meeting spot can be found here.
