Overview of Area

The roaded areas just south and west of Bishop provide a large complex of routes for local residents and tourists exploring these rolling hills.

Accessed primarily by Highway 168, several routes surveyed extend north into the Buttermilks and Tungsten Hills. In this area, these routes run between granite outcroppings and alongside creeks running east from the slopes of Mt. Humphreys and Mt.Tom. South of Highway 168, routes skirt the Coyote Plateau providing motorized recreation in sandy lowlands.

Overall Management Recommendations

Redundant routes and short spurs are common in both the Bishop and Tungsten Hills areas. Due to the high level of motorized use in these areas, we recommend continued vigilance in management to keep motorized users from extending spur routes and creating more redundant routes. As users head south out of Bishop and up onto the Coyote Plateau, changes in use patterns and habitat require more extensive management.
