(green)USGS 7.5 Quad Inyo Recreation Map None yes no no Route description: Spur route heads north off T9 one mile northeast of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
Narrative Summary: Moderate-use route in lodge pole pine community with pumice-sandy soil. Motorbike and mountain bike tracks were found as this route leaves T9 and heads north (Picture 803001). Some route proliferation was found along the route (Pictures 803002 & 803003). Beyond inventoried end route continues as a narrow trail (Picture 803004). No clear purpose for route and end is at no clear destination (Picture 803005).
Wildlife and vegetation: Black-backed woodpeckers, yellow-rumped warbler, lupine, pussy paws.
Recommendation: There is no unique problem with this route aside from the proliferation that is common in this area. This spur is found off a signed mountain bike trail and may invite proliferation from confused riders. Route should be closed or signed to indicate it is not the main trail.

(green)USGS 7.5 Quad Inyo Recreation Map None yes no no Route description: Complex of routes just north of 2721ns heading to N814. Routes located less than one mile NNE of Mammoth Mountain Ski area.
Narrative Summary: The main route in this complex (Z2694) is moderate use with motorbike, mountain bike, and full-sized vehicles (Picture 803014). Some proliferation was found off Z2694 (Picture 803011). At its end, Z2694 narrows to a trail and continues as N815 (Picture 803017). The complex of spur routes (Z892, Z891, Z2695, and Z2693) are low use routes that are fairly difficult to difficult to find off Z2694. Z892 heads WNW (Pictures 803006 & 803007). Z891 is a faint route that heads SW (Pictures 803009 & 803010). Z2695 heads west (803012 & 803013).
Recommendation: Z2694 allows access to N815 which, in turn, is access to Dead Man Creek and points north. Current management should continue along this route. The associated spur routes, (Z892, Z891, Z2695, and Z2693), should be signed as closed to motorized use and removed from the inventory to avoid inviting proliferation routes by confused users.

(green)USGS 7.5 Quad Inyo Recreation Map None yes no no Route description: This narrow trail heading north-south connecting routes just north of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area with routes south of Deadman Creek.
Narrative Summary: South end of route joins with Z2694 (Picture 803014) then route heads north as narrow trail with motorbike and mountain bike tracks (Pictures 803015, 803041). Heading from the south, a downed tree directs traffic off the route and some proliferation occurs by presumably confused users trying to locate the trail (Picture 803016). Some rutting was found north of the downed tree (Picture 803043) as this route meanders through lodgepole, red fir and Jeffery pine.
Recommendation: This is a proliferated, unauthorized motorcycle route through the San Joaquin roadless area. Route should be removed from the inventory.

Route description: Main north/south route heading from Deadman Creek to south of Deer Mountain.Narrative Summary: Well-defined high-use route in lodgepole community. Motorbike, pedestrian, mountain bike, ATV and full-sized vehicle tracks were found on this route. In the northern section, the route crosses Deadman Creek (Picture 803027) in a growing, 90 degree crossing. Crossing is 9' above the crossing 40' at the crossing and 12' below. Off the southern section of the route there is some confusion as to the labeling of the route. Signs on the ground indicate that the route continues north at the south junction with Z893 (Picture 803035), however the route inventory map indicates this is route Z893. The route with the most traffic is this easternmost route, yet several maps indicate the route not signed as 03S22 is 03S22. We assume the sign was placed incorrectly. A good deal of proliferation occurs off this section of the route (Pictures 803033 & 803034) and managers appear to be addressing this concern.
Recommendation: This is a major route and current management should continue. The play-area in the flat on the south edge of this route needs continued vigilance by managers to avoid further degradation of the area. A bridge at the crossing of Deadman Creek (Picture 803027) might limit sediment loading as a result of this high-use route.

(green)USGS 7.5 Quad Inyo Recreation Map None yes no no Route description: Spur route heading southwest from junction with 03S22 3/4 mile south of Deadman Creek.
Narrative Summary: This route begins as high use at the junction with 03S22 in a lodge pole pine community (Picture 803023). Several hundred yards west on the route is a high-use, stable campsite 30 feet from Deadman Creek (Picture 803024). Beyond the campsite the use quickly drops from high to low and effectively ends with a large fallen tree blocking traffic (Picture 803026).
Recommendation: This route has no clear purpose and use drops off quickly as it heads west. Tree fall is common in this area and active maintenance will be necessary to keep this route open. Given the time and energy necessary to keep this route open and to avoid proliferation around fallen debris, this area should be allowed to return to its natural condition.

(green)USGS 7.5 Quad Inyo Recreation Map None yes no no Route description: 1/4 mile spur heading south off 03S22 1 mile SSW of Deer Mountain.
Narrative Summary: Moderate-low use route with motorbike and ATV tracks in lodge pole pine community (Picture 803036). Route quickly ascends steep hill (Picture 803037) and appears to have no destination.
Recommendation: This route is essentially a hill-climb that has been used enough to call it a route. It has no clear destination and should be signed and removed from the inventory.

(green)USGS 7.5 Quad Inyo Recreation Map None yes some routes shown* no * Z879 is shown as a trail. Z881 is shown only as a spur and not a loop. There is a spur shown off of Z885 that is not on the inventory.
Route description: Spurs and loops west of 03S22 west of Deer MountainNarrative Summary: These routes have very similar characteristics and were thus grouped together in this narrative. All are low to very low-use routes through thick lodgepole and fir. Only Z887 has a purpose as it links with the narrow through-trail called N814. Little proliferation was found off these routes as they are very narrow and the surrounding forest is very thick (Pictures 803044, 803046). Spur routes end abruptly for the most part (Picture 803041 & 803045) While others sections are blocked by large woody debris (Picture 803045). Trees across the route and narrow sections require motorists to chose different routes around obstructions resulting in route proliferation.
Recommendation: These routes show little damage yet require active maintenance to keep open due to downed trees in area. Given that the area is low use, it seems sensible that managers direct their attention to more heavily used routes. This could be a decent mountain bike trail extending N184 further north, but this too would require active maintenance.

Route description: Complex of routes on southeast flank of White Wing Mountain.Narrative Summary: All routes show moderate use by ATVs and motorbikes through Jeffery pine, lodge pole and ceanothus. From junction pictured in 803053, Z2824 heads west joining with Z2825. Z2825 ends at the base of a hill (Picture 803051) and a narrow trail continues up a steep hill and beyond further west (Pictures 803050 & 803049). Z2822 travels WSW from the same junction before being blocked .2 miles up by a large tree (Picture 803052). Z2823 is a short, steep hill climb to the east (Picture 803054). The unnamed spur that heads north off Z860 ends at an ineffective barrier and route proliferation extends the route up a steep hill beyond the barrier (Picture 803055).
Recommendation: Proliferation from the ends of these routes is a concern. Three of the four routes involve steep hill-climbs beyond the official end of the routes (the fourth blocked by a large tree). Signs should be attempted to encourage motorists to remain on existing routes and effective barriers should be used to stop further proliferation.
